LAYERS: Daniel Phillips

Daniel will be speaking at 301 Gallery tomorrow, Wed. Sept. 23 at 11:30 am.
301 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA.

this event is free and open to the public-please join us!

The thing that fascinates me most about Daniel's work is how his stop-motion videos layer mundane motions back at us, the viewers, in a way that enhances the pace and consequently the beauty of reality. For example, Phillips' camera focused for hours on the back wall of the gallery, which he'd just newly opened to the outside world, to document an entire sunset. The simple vinyl lettering of the gallery's name, 301 Gallery, became an exquisite poem in part because we are able to witness the elapsing of an hours-long process in a minute or so. We experience the heady rush of the voyeur, but from the point of view of a much larger, perhaps god-like creature for whom earthly time whirs by.

To read an alternate opinion about Daniel's work, see "The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research."

Daniel Phillips

Daniel Phillips, a 2009 MFA recipient from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has been working in the 301 Gallery since mid-July on his new exhibition, Tear Down These Walls. The exhibition is now open to the public through September 26th. If you stop by between now and Sept. 9th, the date of the reception (6-8 pm, all are welcome), you can meet him.

The title is apt, as the heart of the project is to tear down a wall that blocked the huge gallery space from street-side viewing. The building was originally a furniture store, and the large, modernist wall of windows invites glances inside.

Phillips records all of his DIY-style demolition and construction with a camera. He arranges thousands of stop-motion images into video that is now playing amidst the continued activity.
